If I shoot some one on private property?

Ok so I live on a private road it's owned my my family there is this guy who stole my brother stuff in the house next to mine and 2 houses have been broken into we can't prove he broke in but we know for sure he took my brothers stuff well the other day he was in my yard n when I questioned him he said he was chasing a rabbit ya bs right well anyways he is a known heroin addict I was just wondering if I shoot him on my property how much trouble I will get in and if I will do time. I'm looking for advice on protecting my family
