The pilgrims moved to America (mainly from England however) to escape religious persecution. They did not like the church of England, which King James, at the time, strictly enforced all of England to follow in terms of religious practices. The pilgrims were Puritans, and were much hated by English society for they strongly disagreed with the Church's religious practices. They desired to worship without interference, which they saw that promise in America.
