Do the Scott Pilgrim books contain more story than the movie?

Ok I really want to read these books because I LOVED the movie but before I spend $40 on the books I want to know how much more is in the book that wasnt in the movie. I really want to read them but if its basically the same exact thing in the movie then I kind of dont want to read it. I know that there are more background stories and more character development but thats all that Ive heard. Im hoping that reading the books will give me a new experience in the epic world of SP. But Im worried that since Ive already seen the movie that I will be disapointed with the book :( and I really dont want that. please leave your input. NO SPOILERS PLEASE
