What are the effect for taking drugs like heroin?

Heroin has killed thousands, if not millions, of people over the last 40 or so years (I'm not sure exactly when it got started). From what I've seen, users quit eating and have to take larger and larger doses to get the same high. Sooner or later, they OD and die.
